Spider Vein Removal

Spider veins and broken capillaries can appear anywhere on the body. For the face, we typically use a laser to collapse the vessel. Vascular lasers use infrared energy to target blood vessels, broken capillaries, spider veins, vascular growths, and discoloration. During the treatment, your eyes will be protected with safety glasses. You may briefly feel a warm or hot sensation as the laser pulses preferentially reacts with red pigment and causes them to fade away. There is very little pain and minimal downtime. Your procedure may take a few minutes up to half an hour depending on the size of the area to be treated. Redness or a pink color at the treatment site may last a few days. Stay out of the sun for 1-2 weeks after the laser treatment and wear sunscreen SPF 30 or higher.

For the legs, we usually begin with one to three sclerotherapy sessions. Sclerotherapy is the injection of spider veins or telangectasia (small red and purple veins) with a sclerosing agent, which causes the veins to collapse and fade away. With each treatment approximately 50-75% of the vessels injected will resolve. There is mild discomfort during the injection due to the needle itself, but the solution is painless as it enters the vessel. In general, support stockings are not required before or after treatment, however, they may prevent or decrease bruising after the treatment. Repeat treatments can be scheduled 6-8 weeks apart.

For larger vessels, varicose veins, and stasis dermatitis (brown-orange discoloration of the legs), there may be a medical problem with the circulation in the legs. Ultrasound evaluation and treatment with endovenous laser or Clarivein may be necessary. Often, these medical procedures can be covered by insurance. Please ask us for more information.
